From Deer to Dancing: Video Captures It All by Andy Zaso
When I was asked to write this article about videotaping weddings in the Pocono area, at first I thought, "no problem". Then, I started thinking about what I should put down on paper. What is it that I do differently in the Poconos? Why is it a different way of shooting? It took some thought and some self-observation to get an answer. When you have been performing the same ritual for a number of years, it truly becomes second nature and you do not give it a second thought. I now gave it a second thought.
When working in urban areas, you get accustomed to getting whatever the action is at the time. Usually the scenery involves streets, homes and large buildings. The only formals that are usually taken possibly involve a small garden at the church or a gazebo at the reception hall. Choices are limited and in many instances so is your time. But, in the case of the Pocono Mountain wedding, choices are many and you are only bound by your limited imagination.
In the unique area in which we work, you can go from a beautiful garden, an old farmhouse, a crystal clear stream to a cascading waterfall in a matter of minutes. Options for the bride and groom in the Poconos are almost endless. A wedding in the corner of the world truly makes you feel as though your day is the most special and nothing or no one can change that.
A videographer shoots a wedding with all this in mind. The bride and groom are always important, but as a videographer, you become much more in tune with your surroundings. How the light reflects off the water, how the bride's dress bounces across a meadow at an old farmhouse. These are the moments that makes planning for a wedding all the more worthwhile. A videographer needs to capture these little moments that makes up the entire wedding day experience in the Pocono Mountains.
Anything can happen when you are surrounded by this much wildlife.
A few years ago, a photographer and I were taking care of some formal pictures and candid video moments. We had the bride and groom pose near old stone buildings on the property, as well as a pond and along a tree line. All was going well and the video was looking good up to that point. But, all was about to change...for the better. Out of nowhere a deer decided to get a closer look at the bride and groom. The doe came up to the bride and proceeded to eat her bouquet. She was not nervous, so the photographer and I took advantage of a most unrealistic moment. You just do not have moments such as these in other areas of the country.
Of course, I would be remiss if I left out one of the most popular reasons to come to the Poconos. The fiery colors of autumn attract thousands to the Pocono Mountains, but no one will savor this season more than a bride and groom. No studio can match the depth and variety of the foliage in September and October. Videotaping a fall wedding is always a special event because there are so many colors and so many backgrounds to choose from. Orange and yellow reflections colorize lakes, streams and rivers. Coordinated bouquets, and the soft colors of the fall translate in to a special wedding video.
