Autumn Centerpieces From Nature
by Melanie Jeffers Frassinelli

The Pocono Mountains pack a vibrant punch of color in the autumn. With a little imagination and planning, the beauty of the outdoors can bring an earthy feel to your wedding floral decor.

Using natural resources also is economical. Children will welcome the opportunity to gather freshly dropped leaves the day before or morning of the wedding. Gathering acorns can keep little hands busy for weeks before the event. You will be amazed how many acorns you can score for $1 (or an ice cream cone). Acorns look great natural, but for a formal look spritz them with gold spray paint.

Now, what do you do with this stockpile?

Leaves and acorns can be spread on the table around the centerpiece (after careful inspection for insects). Bundle leaves together with wire and floral tape and arrange them in foam around the base of candles. Use acorns in the bottom of glass vases for decoration as an anchor for flowers or bundled leaves.

Place pillar candles of various heights in a very low wide bowl. Spread acorns and other small natural objects between the candles to fill in.

Use these suggestions as a starting point and let your imagination take over. Ask your florist for their ideas and about fall designs they have created. If you choose to construct the centerpieces yourself, make it a group project. Help and support from your family and friends will help avoid undue stress on your big day.
