The Poconos Provides Great Choices For Wedding Cakes by Mary Lininger
When getting married in the beautiful and relaxed Pocono area, finding the right wedding cake and wedding cake designer can be more simple and rewarding than one might think.
The selection of wedding cake designers and their cake creations is as diversified and extensive, if not more so, than any other area.
When deciding on a location for your reception, don't be surprised if the cake is included with your reception price. Reception sites do this as a service to the bride and groom, as they are generally familiar with the cake designers in their area and have experience with their service, products and dependability.
Things to look for in a good wedding cake package include the selection available to you, the qualifications of the wedding cake designer and the reception site's flexibility should you want to choose a cake not included in the package. You should also be able to meet with the cake designer to plan your cake and review qualifications. With some wedding cake packages you may be able to upgrade your cake from a standard cake to an elegant work of art.
If you are looking for a wedding cake on your own, there are several ways to find the baker right for you. First determine your budget. Most designers offer flexible pricing and this is very helpful to the designer in guiding you to an affordable yet beautiful cake designed to fit your specific needs.
Second, look at magazine publications, books and on the Internet to get some ideas of what style of cake appeals to you. The Pocono's has a designer to meet any style of cake. Keep in mind that not all cake designers are skilled enough to produce fondants, sugarpaste and marzipan styles of cake. Be prepared to take pictures of styles that you like.
Next make a list of potential bakers. Compile this list using the yellow page directory, the Internet and local bridal publications. Bridal shows are a great way to meet designers, get referrals and references and see the designer's products first hand. At this point you will generally find there are three types of bakers: grocery store bakeries, retail bakeries and self-employed cake designers.

Most grocery store bakeries in the Poconos will not offer wedding cakes. The in-store bakeries that do will usually offer more traditional cakes made with buttercream frosting and a simpler selection of cake and design choices.
Retail bakeries in the Pocono area will usually offer more diversity. Again you will find that not all retail units can provide you with a wedding cake. Retail bakeries can be a good source of cookies and pastry for couples wishing to have Viennese pastry tables at their reception.
Self-employed cake designers are available in the Pocono area. They can be more experienced and better trained in specialty techniques, but do your research. Self-employed designers can be the best choice for couples looking for cakes done with advanced techniques, although some are just starting out as well. Always check to be sure proper licensing requirements have been met. This is almost always where you will find specialty decorators, trained and able to produce state-of-the-art cakes. Many times self-employed designers are a great source of cookies and pastries for Viennese pastry tables also.
The Poconos, as always, will provide you with a beautiful and scenic location to enjoy all of your wedding memories, including those of your first cake together. Bon Appe'tit.
